Greens Introduce Bill to Bring Prison Privatisation to Parliament

Friday 06 March 2009

NSW Greens MP and Prisons spokesperson Sylvia Hale today introduced a private members’ Bill to require any proposed privatisation of the state’s prisons to be brought before the Parliament for approval. “If this Bill is passed, all proposals to privatise a prison in NSW would have to be approved by a vote of both houses of Parliament,” Ms Hale said.

“With a multi-million dollar private prisons contract on offer and a record of large political donations by at least one of the likely tenderers it is essential that any proposal for privatisation come before the parliament for detailed public scrutiny and approval.”

“We have seen from overseas what happens when the profit motive is introduced into the justice system. Potentially lucrative new incentives for corruption are created; pressure is applied to cut costs, to reduce programs, staff numbers and safety levels for both inmates and staff. Money starts to flow between private companies, political parties and even the judiciary, corrupting and distorting the justice system,” Ms Hale said.

“The potential loss of jobs in regional centres like Cessnock raise serious concerns for the impact on the region’s economy, on the livelihood of those who lose their jobs and on the well being of their families.”

“The potential loss of services threaten to increase the recidivism rates which will affect all members of the community as crime rates rise.”

“These are serious matters. The Parliament has a responsibility to ensure that all aspects are examined in detail and in the harsh light of public scrutiny,” Ms Hale said.
