Marina Documents Must Be Made Public
Saturday 11 July 2009
Serious doubts about the viability of the Shell Cove marina project make it imperative that the feasibility study for the project prepared by developer Australand be made public, according to Sylvia Hale, the NSW Greens MP and Planning spokesperson. “This is a highly controversial project that will cause significant environmental damage to the coast. Council and the developers originally promised it would be funded entirely from land sales but now the Council is asking for a public handout to fund what is essentially a private development,” Ms Hale said.
“The public has a right to know what is going on. The Council is not entitled to put its hand out for public funds on one hand, then on the other hand claim that the documents relating to the project are “commercial in confidence” and can’t be released,” Ms Hale said.
A request for the release of documents is to be considered at the Council meeting next Tuesday, after it was deferred from the previous meeting.
“The best thing the Council can do now is come clean, release all of the documents and let the public see what is really going on,” Ms Hale said.
“I cannot see any justification for either the state or federal government putting money into the project. The Council should take the opportunity to reconsider the whole project and find a more financially and environmentally sustainable use for the site,” Ms Hale said.
