Albanese Condemns Inner West to More Aircraft Noise
Saturday 20 June 2009
Sylvia Hale the Greens MP has condemned the decision by Federal Transport Minister and Member for Grayndler, Anthony Albanese, to approve the Sydney Airport Master Plan that will increase aircraft traffic from 286,101 flights now to 427,000 by 2029.
“While in Opposition Mr Albanese claimed he was against the increasing aircraft noise pollution suffered by his constituents. Now he’s in power we can judge him by his actions rather than his words and his actions reveal that he is willing to sacrifice the welfare of hundreds of thousands of inner west residents to support the profits of the Macquarie Bank consortium that owns the airport,” said Ms Hale.
“Mr Albanese had a chance to finally do something to limit the aircraft noise that is the scourge of inner west residents but, in what is now a time honoured tradition of the Labor Party, he caved into corporate interests.”
”The Greens have been campaigning for a cap on the number of aircraft movements , an extension of the curfew and for an alternative airport to be built so Mascot can phased out. It is clear now that no other party is willing to come to the rescue of the long suffering residents of the inner-west,” Ms Hale said.
Before joining the Greens Ms Hale was elected to Marrickville Council as a representative of the No Aircraft Noise Party.
