Government’s devious manipulation of Lower Hunter Strategy a rort say Greens

“It would seem that the Labor Government has learned nothing from the experience of last year when the Land and Environment Court overturned Government approval for Catherine Hill Bay and Huntlee,” said Sylvia Hale, Greens MLC and Spokesperson for Planning.

“When Justice David Lloyd ruled that a fair-minded observer could be forgiven for thinking that the former Planning Minister Frank Sartor might not have brought an impartial and unprejudiced mind to his decision to approve Catherine Hill Bay, he spoke for the people of NSW who are sick and tired of what appears to be the influence of political donors on the planning process.

“The announcement by Minister Kelly effectively overturns the Land and Environment Court ruling, which described the land swap deal in a Memorandum of Understanding between the developer and the government as a “land bribe”.

“Minister Kelly’s decision to remove all reference to the MoU makes a farce of the justice system.

“To eliminate references to the MoU and replace them with a ‘Voluntary Planning Agreement’ is to simply play with words while retaining the substance of the original ‘land bribe’.

 “The Huntlee and Catherine Hill Bay projects should be abandoned.

 “The original assessment that these two projects rated last and second last as suitable locations for re-development should stand.

The Government must focus on sustainable development located around important infrastructure such as railways and near existing population centres.

 “There is nothing to commend the re-writing of the Regional Strategy. The Government should  withdraw it and ensure future planning is based on a coherent social, environmental and economic model rather than being determined by vested interests and major ALP donors,” said Ms Hale.
