Homeless Group Wins Court Order to Stop Eviction from Bondi Pavilion

Wednesday 24 June 2009

A group of nine homeless people has won a Supreme Court injunction stopping Waverly Council and local police evicting them from the rear of the Bondi Pavilion.

The Court order was issued this afternoon at the completion of an interim hearing attended by representatives of the homeless and Waverly Council.

The parties will be back before the Court on Friday when the homeless group will be seeking orders to require the council to find them alternative accommodation before they can be removed from the Pavilion.

The spokesperson for the group, Kevin St Alder, said:

“We tried to work this out with the Council but the Mayor would not give us an assurance that the group would not be forcibly removed. Today’s court action shows that homeless people have legal rights too and we hope the Council will now work with us to find a longer term solution for our group.”

Sylvia Hale, NSW Greens MP and Housing Spokesperson called on Waverly Council to work cooperatively with the group to find long-term low cost accommodation in the area.
