Illawarra And Port Macquarie Residents Punished Again
Tuesday 18 November 2008
The decision by the federal Minister for Infrastructure and Local Government Anthony Albanese to exclude representatives from the Port Macquarie, Wollongong and Shellharbour Councils from today’s historic local government meeting in Canberra means that residents of those areas are being punished twice for the failings of their former councils, according to NSW Greens MP Sylvia Hale.
“First these residents were denied the opportunity to elect a new council at the September local government elections, now they are excluded from this important national meeting because they don’t have an elected council. It is grossly unfair to these long-suffering residents,” Ms Hale said.
“Given that the meeting is discussing long term infrastructure funding the people of the Illawarra and Port Macquarie may miss out on much needed funds.”
“Residents of the Illawarra deserve to be very angry. It was the corrupt and incompetent Labor Party councillors who brought down the councils, the Labor state government who refused to allow elections and now a Labor federal government that is excluding Wollongong and Shellharbour residents being represented.”
“It appears the residents of the Illawarra are being punished repeatedly for the failings of the local Labor Party.”
“The federal government must ensure that the needs of the residents of Wollongong, Shellharbour and Port Macquarie are properly considered when decisions are made about the allocation of infrastructure funding,” said Ms Hale.
