Mini-Budget a Maxi-Blow for Western Sydney
Tuesday 11 November 2008
Labor’s mini-budget is a major blow to the people of western Sydney according to Sylvia Hale, NSW Greens MP and spokesperson for Western Sydney.
“The people of western Sydney have been waiting for years for the promised improvements to transport infrastructure but those promises have now been broken,” said Ms Hale.
“The axing of the promised north-west and south-west rail links is an insult to the long-suffering residents of western Sydney.”
“Faced with declining property values, long distances to travel to and from work, grid-locked roads and overcrowded trains and buses the people of western Sydney expected some support from the Labor government. Instead they have been abandoned with most infrastructure projects for the western suburbs cancelled or delayed indefinitely.”
“This is a government that has completely lost touch with the needs of western Sydney residents. It is incapable of delivering the services and infrastructure that western Sydney desperately needs. The government is making short term financial gains by cancelling these projects but it is the residents of western Sydney who will pay the long term social and environmental costs,” said Ms Hale.
