Public Meeting on Overdevelopment in Bankstown

Thursday 18 June 2009

A public meeting has been organised by the Bankstown Greens Group to discuss overdevelopment in the Bankstown area and how to protect the community from overcrowding and the environmental, social and traffic problems that come with it.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday the 1st of July 2009 from 7pm at Padstow Progress Hall, 11 Ryan Road, Padstow

The meeting will be addressed by NSW Greens MP and Planning spokesperson Sylvia Hale who will talk about what is wrong with the NSW planning system and how to fix it.

Recent controversial development proposals in the Bankstown area include a 1200 unit development on the Georges River at Milperra, a major residential subdivision at the Potts Hill reservoir, expanded activities at Bankstown airport and an extension of a Bankstown carpark into adjoining parkland.

”Bankstown is being pressured to squeeze in thousands more houses, apartments and commercial developments over the next decade while the state government is deregulating planning controls. The pressure on local infrastructure is immense and people will pay for overdevelopment with increased noise and air pollution, reduced open space and traffic gridlock,” Ms Hale said.

Adam Tran, Convenor of the Bankstown Greens said: “The meeting will give local residents an opportunity to hear about what is happening and to discuss ways to protect the community of Bankstown from the negative impacts of overdevelopment.”

Anyone interested in attending should contact secretary@bankstown.nsw.greens.org.au or Adam Tran on 0403 805 493. Spaces are limited.
